One thing thing that I learned this weekend is the importance of your online identity. What is your online identity? Its can mean different things but it primarily refers you profile on social media websites.

The big three social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. The most relevent site for someone looking for a job is Linkedin. The reason for this is that many recruiters are using Linkedin as their primary job candidate database. This simply means that if you are not on Linkedin you are invisible to many (if not most) recruiters.

Make sure that whatever site you use is active. If the last job was posted in 2007 its time to move onto the next site.

I want to suggest one positive use of this extra time. While you must continue looking for employment everyday, I recommend that you implement a self improvement project. Pick the one area that if you mastered would bring the most value to your future employer. This could be becoming a good public speaker, or mastering Microsoft PowerPoint.

Pick your topic and then find a training resource. You could use anything from a book to a local class. It doesn’t matter what you use, what matters is that you dedicate an hour each day to your project. You will be amazed at how quickly a weekness becomes a strength.

Most job seekers aren’t aware of it, but they can play the search game also. Not with search engines, but with job boards.

Employers who use job boards to find candidates are performing searches. For a job seeker to be successful with job boards, it helps to be aware of two job board search optimization (JBSO) techniques.

The first technique involves an understanding of how job boards sort resumes. When an employer does a search, looking to fill a position, the results are returned with the newest resumes at the top. This makes sense when considering that older resumes are more likely to have already found employment.

If some time has passed since you posted your resume to a job board, you need to do something in order get your resume back on top of the search results. All you need to do is update your resume and repost it on the job boards. Don’t radically rewrite your resume, simply change a phrase or two. After you repost to the job boards, like magic you will be back on the top of the search results. Do this every week in order to stay on top.

The second JBSO technique involves keywords. Keywords are the search terms that an employer uses to find candidates for a particular position. For example, a search for a database administrator would include the following phrases: database, DBA, SQL, SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, etc. I’m sure I missed some, but the point is made. You must know what the appropriate keywords for the position you are trying to obtain and make sure those words appear in your resume.
