Recently I was at a conference with an organization called Career Directors International (CDI). This organization is for resume writers and career coaches. These are professionals that know a lot about the current job market.

One thing thing that I learned this weekend is the importance of your online identity. What is your online identity? Its can mean different things but it primarily refers you profile on social media websites.

The big three social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. The most relevent site for someone looking for a job is Linkedin. The reason for this is that many recruiters are using Linkedin as their primary job candidate database. This simply means that if you are not on Linkedin you are invisible to many (if not most) recruiters.

Nursing is always in demand and will continue to increase in demand as baby boomers get older.

IT workers are in constant demand. The pay is good and the work is enjoyable.

Niche Job Boards

Have you found a niche job board for your profession? For example if you are in IT you must check out dice.com. This site has thousands of job leads for people in various areas of IT.

If you are a nurse you should check out nursejungle.com. There are many more examples for every job category imaginable. You can find them by asking colleagues or by doing a Google search.

Make sure that whatever site you use is active. If the last job was posted in 2007 its time to move onto the next site.

Be Wary of The Ladders

I recently read a great article by Nick Corcodilos of asktheheadhunter.com about a job board called The Ladders. To sum up the article The Ladders is a job board that claims to offer only 100K + jobs and charges job candidates for the privilege for accessing their exclusive leads. This claim is not true and some jobs found on The Ladders pay below 100K. The article has other dirt on this job board.

Always remember that job boards make a ton of money from the companies that advertise jobs. It is unethical for them to attempt to extract money from job candidates as well.
